General Gardening Supply List

  • Garden gloves – include small, medium, and large to accommodate different-sized hands.
  • Trowels
  • Watering cans – preferably watering cans that allow for 2-handed holding.
  • Empty tub for water – a tub is easier for children to fill up their watering cans, and allows more children to fill their watering cans at once.
  • Potting soil – essentially a mixture of peatmoss, perlite, and compost. It is ideal for planting in containers because it is lighter and fluffier than garden soil, so the plants can grow more easily. Look for decent quality potting soil (i.e. without pieces of wood in it). It does not need to be sterilized, nor include moisture beads, fertilizer, or mycorrhizal fungi.
  • Empty containers – can be plastic mache, clay, or tin. Must have drainage to prevent overwatering.
